Tutorials will be held every Tuesday from 10-10:50am. If you are not in the tutorial within the first 10 minutes and you don’t see me in the tutorial, send me an to let me know that you need help and I will be there. Attendance is not mandatory, but please attend if you have any questions or difficulty with any of the concepts we are covering. Lab session is scheduled for May 19th from 9:30am – 11:30am (SCI14) abd 12:30 – 2:30pm (SCI24) at the office in Airdrie.

Unit 1: Applications of Matter and Chemical Change 100 years ago you would have had things such as unprocessed cheese, Beef jerky, eggs, or materials like tent canvas, raw cotton or sheep skin and leather shoes or boots. What are some items that have just been developed in recent history? SimilaritiesDifferences

Polymer – The word “polymer” comes from the greek words poly (many) and meros (parts). A polymer is a giant molecule made up of many small and identical sub-molecules.

What is an alloy? Metal alloys contain more than one metallic element. Metal alloys have properties that are different from the properties of the individual metal elements that make them up.

HHPS – hazardous household product symbols WHMIS – workplace hazardous materials information system

What are some indicators that a chemical reaction has occurred?

1.Combustion fuel + oxygen  carbon dioxide + water vapour + energy 2.Neutralization acid + base  salt + water 3.Simple Composition Reaction – Two or more elements combine to form a compound. Whenever you see two elements as reactants, you know that the reaction is a simple composition reaction. 4.Simple Decomposition Reaction – A reaction that breaks a compound into its component elements.

ChemicalWhere used Number of Atoms WHMIS Symbols Common Name CaCO 3 SiO 2 C 2 H 5 OH CH 4 C 12 H 22 O 11
