Nutrient Management Summary CNMP Core Curriculum Section 5 – Nutrient Management

CNMP Development Core Training Curriculum These course materials have been developed as a cooperative effort between five land-grant universities and The Natural Resources Conservation Service. You should now understand: Long term strategic planning vs. annual (tactical) review & planning When & how to base a manure application plan on nitrogen or phosphorus Effects & fate of N, P & K

You should now understand: Land application for agronomic benefits & environmental protection while addressing manure storage interval, crop rotation, manure application equipment and conservation concerns

Nutrient Management What is the purpose of Nutrient Management in the CNMP? –Addresses the requirements for land application of all nutrients and organic byproducts –Land application procedures must be planned and implemented to minimize potential adverse impacts to the environment and public health

Nutrient Management Criteria for Nutrient Management –Meet the NRCS Nutrient Management Policy in the General Manual, Title 190, Part 402, and Title 190, Part 302 –Meet criteria in NRCS conservation practice standards Nutrient Management (Code 590) Irrigation Water Management (Code 449)

Nutrient Management What are the Requirements for Nutrient Management? Develop a nutrient budget and application schedule for N, P & K that includes all potential sources

Nutrient Management What are the Requirements for Nutrient Management? Document the following: –Crop types, cropping sequence, & yield targets –Nutrient form, source, amount, timing, & application method - by field –Application equipment & calibration method

Nutrient Management What are the Requirements for Nutrient Management? Document the following: –Current soil test results –Manure and organic by-product test results

Nutrient Management Additional Considerations for Nutrient Management Air Quality –Consider impact of selected conservation practices –Land application sites may be impaired by excessive dust, gaseous emissions, and odors –Ammonia emissions may be deposited to surface waters –Soil incorporation of manure and organic by-products can reduce gaseous emissions

Nutrient Management Additional Considerations for Nutrient Management Pathogens –Consider impact of selected conservation –Pathogens occur naturally in animal waste –Exposure can cause illness in humans and animals –Practices used to prevent nutrient movement from animal operations such as leaching, runoff and erosion control are likely to prevent the movement of pathogens

Nutrient Management Additional Considerations for Nutrient Management Salt and Heavy Metals Build-up –Potential for human and animal health problems –Threaten soil productivity and crop marketability –Build-up should be tracked through soil testing –Additional guidance: National Planning Procedures Handbook NRCS Agricultural Waste Management Field Handbook USEPA Title 40 Part 503 -Standards for the Use or Disposal of Sewage Sludge
