LESSON #8 LCM: Lowest Common Multiple
WHAT IS A MULTIPLE? A multiple is what you get when you multiply by a number. A multiple is a product of two numbers. Multiples are infinite!
WHAT IS AN LCM? LCM stands for lowest or least common multiple. This means the smallest multiple that is the same for 2 (or more) numbers when listing their multiples Find the LCM of 4 and 6 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 6: 6, 12, 18LCM = 12
MORE EXAMPLES OF LCM:
GCD VS LCM – HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENT? GCD = Greatest Common Divisor GCD will always be smaller than the original numbers because you are dividing. This is used when you want to create smaller groups such as teams. LCM = Lowest Common Multiple LCM will always be larger than the original numbers because they are multiplied by another number. This is used for events that will happen in the future.
FOR YOUR NOTECARD: LEAST COMMON MULTIPLE LCM = least or lowest common multiple LCM will always be greater than or equal to the numbers you started with List out all multiples until you find one that is common – take the first one! Find the LCM of 4 and 6 4: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 6: 6, 12, 18 LCM OF 4 AND 6 IS 12
