Do the Crime, Do the Time

 UEQ: How were American political rights and institutions derived from philosophies of the past?  LEQ: Why is rule of law (laws) needed for the development of society?

 Think about how many rules you have to follow in one day.  List (roughly) a number of how many rules you think you must follow in one day.  List five rules that you think are the top rules you follow during one day.  Share your answer with a different partner or partners.  After sharing, come up with a small group answer to this question: Why Do Laws/Rules Exist?

 Different rules and laws exist in different places. ◦ School, Work, Home, Sporting Events  Penalties are made to punish those that break laws.  Laws: ◦ Rules of society, enforced by government  Laws are the only rules that must be followed, rules can be broken.

Why Do Laws Exist???

 Using pages 512 to 516 and the Graphic Organizer that I have handed out, fill in the graphic organizer.  The center should be titled, “Why Laws Exist”  Each of the four outlying squares represent each of the four sections titled in red lettering from 512 to 516.  Write down in each square, four of the most valuable points that you can find in each section that describes why we have laws.  We will go over each section when finished.
