The body includes as many paragraphs as it takes to provide complete support taking into account the assignment and word / time limitations. Let’s review informational writing. Most essays follow this pattern. FOCUS – Informational writing with textual evidence Introduction Hook/Grabber Thesis Body Paragraphs of Evidence and Elaboration Topic sentence Introduce Evidence Elaborate on Evidence Transition to next paragraph Conclusion Wraps up the paper Reinforces the thesis Leaves the reader satisfied This is your FOCUS. To maintain FOCUS in your paper, always support your thesis.

FOCUS – Informational writing with textual evidence

FOCUS—The Thesis To maintain FOCUS in a paper, start with a clear thesis. Writing Task: Read the article How Sea Turtles Navigate to the Same Beach Every Year. Write to explain the process sea turtles use to return to the same beach year after year. Use information from the text in your essay. FOCUS – Informational writing with textual evidence

Prompt: Write to explain the process sea turtles use to return to the same beach year after year. Thesis A: Sea turtles are amazing creatures and have a unique ability. Thesis B : Lots of sea turtles nest on the beaches of Florida and return each year. Thesis C : Sea turtles return to the same beach every year because they have a unique ability to navigate the ocean by using the Earth’s magnetic fields. FOCUS – Informational writing with textual evidence Read each of these thesis statements and discuss what the rest of the paper will look like based on this one sentence. Which of these is the best thesis? Which is too narrow? Which is too broad? Write your own thesis.

FOCUS—The Rest of the Paper Next, draft a general outline of your paper to help you maintain focus FOCUS – Informational writing with textual evidence

INTRODUCTION: Thesis: Sea turtles return to the same beach every year because they have a unique ability to navigate the ocean by using the Earth’s magnetic fields. BODY PARAGRAPHS Point 1: They navigate the ocean using the magnetic fields much like sailors use latitude and longitude. Evidence: Sea turtles use the magnetic lines in the sea to find their way home. Point 2: They also navigate the coastline using the unique magnetic signature of the beach. Evidence: The sea turtles will memorize and remember the magnetic signature of the coastlineCONCLUSION Wrap up the essay FOCUS – Informational writing with textual evidence The Outline

Topic Sentence: Topic Sentence: Name one point supporting your thesis. Introduce and State Evidence: Introduce and State Evidence: Provide evidence (reasons, examples, facts, statistics, and/or quotations) from the text to support your claim. Elaborate on Evidence: Elaborate on Evidence: Show how the evidence proves the point you are trying to make in this paragraph. Give more detail. Concluding Sentence / Transition: Concluding Sentence / Transition: End your paragraph with a concluding sentence that wraps up this paragraph and moves into your next point. FOCUS – Argumentative writing with textual evidence Write Each Body Paragraph We’ll do the first one together

Sample Paragraph: Sea turtles navigate the ocean using the magnetic fields much like sailors use latitude and longitude. According to the article How Sea Turtles Navigate to the Same Beach Every Year, scientists realized that sea turtles use “the magnetic lines in the sea to find their way home.” Even though the animals can’t see the lines, they can somehow sense them in order to help guide them as they travel. This really is amazing and interesting, since we as humans don’t “sense” the magnetic lines ourselves. Turtles, though, always find their way home thanks to magnetic fields, both in the sea and on the beach.
