What Are Podcast/Vodcasts? Audio podcasts are usually an MP3 file and are the most common types of podcasts. Enhanced podcasts can have images to go along with the audio. They can also have chapter markers, making it easier to skip to different portions of an episode. Enhanced podcasts are an AAC file and are not supported by all devices. Video podcasts are movies, complete with sound. Video podcasts can be in a variety of formats, but MPEG-4 is the most popular and the only format that will play on iPod and iPad.

Multimedia Literacy “Could it be that today’s students, who do not read as well and are not as literate in the traditional sense as past generations, are developing a ‘multimedia literacy’?”(Picciano, 2011) Fred Hofstetter (1994), a professor at the University of Delaware, raised this question for educators: “ Is multimedia the next literacy?” (Picciano, 2011) Educators find themselves competing with stimulating visual and audio presentations that students are exposed to on a daily basis.

Podcasts as an Educational Tool Statistics show that the primary learning style in “at least 30% of learners is auditory.” (Boulos, Maged 2006) Howard Gardener’s theory that people possess an intelligence that is not a “singular entity that can be measured by standard intelligence tests, but rather is composed of multiple entities” (Picciano, 2011)…Spatial and Musical bridge to facilitate “multimedia literacy”

Podcasts in the Classroom Allowing student to create podcasts or vodcasts is an excellent way to differentiate the product while allowing the student to convey their learning in an innovative and motivating way hook students into a lesson conduct experiments collaborative learning
