YCC YCC Dinghy Fleet Renewal Paulo Moreira YCC, 2016

Dinghy Fleet Renewal  Objective:  Replace the Lasers II  Replace the ISO  What should an YCC boat (dinghy) be?  Sturdy  Easy to rig and unrig  Easy to maintain  Target adult sailors  All the boats should be fun to sail:  Not just addressing the beginners needs  Perhaps to be among the types most used in the Geneva area  A plus for participation in external regattas  Avoid the multiplication of boat types in the club  A plus for internal regattas  A plus for maintenance:  Easy to maintain a small stock of spare parts and sails YCC 2016Paulo Moreira2

The Dinghy Fleet at Present  3 × Lasers I  2 × Laser II  2 × RS 500  1 × Xenon  1 × RS 400  1 × ISO  That is there are:  10 dinghies  6 different types of boats!  Difficult to maintain small stock of spare parts for efficient maintenance!  Xenon, RS 400 and ISO are “lonely” types!  Obvious disadvantages for internal regattas:  We all know what sailors really feel about “compensated time”! YCC 2016Paulo Moreira3

Our Proposal  2 Laser II replaced by  One RS 500  One RS 400  ISO replacement:  29er  The club dinghy fleet will thus be composed of 5 boat types:  3 × Laser  3 × RS 500  2 × RS 400  1 × Xenon (“Loner”)  1 × 29er (“Loner”) Neighbour club (CNV) has a growing fleet!  All the boats chosen are popular types  “Reduced” number of boat types:  5 instead of 6 (moderate decrease)  “Better” feeling of direct competition in regattas!  Facilitates maintenance  Easy to organize a small stock of spare parts and sails  Less “loners”  2 instead of 3 (moderate decrease) YCC 2016Paulo Moreira4

RS 500  Length: 4.34 m  Beam: 1.58 m  Main: 7.5 / 9.5 m 2  Jib: 3.0 / 3.6 m 2  Gennaker: 14 m 2  Hull weight: 77 kg  Sailing weight: ? kg  Single Trapeze  Construction:  GRP composite  RYA PN: 975  Price: 10, CHF  Complete + cover + launching trailer YCC 2016Paulo Moreira5

RS 400  Length: 4.52 m  Beam: 1.98 m  Main: 10.96m 2  Jib: 3.8 m 2  Gennaker: m 2  Hull weight: 85 kg  Sailing weight: 129 kg  No Trapeze  Construction:  Sandwich PVC/fiberglass  RYA PN: 944  Price: 15, CHF  Complete + cover + launching trailer YCC 2016Paulo Moreira6

29er  Length: 4,45 m  Beam: 1.77 m  Main + Jib: 13.19m 2  Gennaker: m 2  Hull weight: 70 kg  Sailing weight: 90 kg  Single Trapeze  Construction:  FRP with foam sandwich laminate  RYA PN: 922  Price: 12, CHF  Complete + cover + launching trailer  (Plus CHF for delivery of the three boats to Versoix)  Total for the three boats + options: 39, CHF YCC 2016Paulo Moreira7

Teaching & Practice  Dinghy courses will be taught on:  The RS 500  With possibility of trapeze practice  The RS 400  The RS 400 would be “downgraded” for ED to D  Due to it´s wide beam the RS 400 is a rather stable boat that can be handled in a wide range of wind conditions by a reasonably experiment dinghy sailor  ED courses will be held on the 29er  A single ED boat probably covers the current needs for ED courses  The 29er will be a challenging boat even for experienced sailors  Might be possible to  Practice with the CNV  Join the CNV regattas. YCC 2016Paulo Moreira8

Portsmouth Yardstick  Corrected Time = Elapsed Time × Scale / Handicap  Scale is:  100 for US and AUS numbers  1000 for UK  RYA Portsmouth Number:  Laser:1091  RS 500: 975  RS 400: 944  29er: 922  Basically the smaller the number the faster the boat:  The higher the penalty applied to the elapsed time YCC 2016Paulo Moreira9
