In ENGR Journals –Personal Journal –Design Journal

Keeping Journals in ENGR 100 Personal Journal –Writer Based –Record your experiences, thoughts, ideas, questions, complaints, doubts, sketches Design Journal –Reader Based –Record your ideas, observations, calculations, questions, complaints, doubts, sketches

Personal (ENGR100) Journal no specific goals and purposes no audience (except the one in our own heads) doesn't pay attention to details –accuracy and relevance of content –organization and layout –graphics –grammar, style, tone, spelling, punctuation is guided by our own thinking, daydreaming, guessing (I.e. any new invention ideas you have for weekly extra credit) appears in journals, notes, back of envelopes, etc. is for ourselves, even though we may share it with others is NOT subject to review and assessment

Design (ENGR100) Journal written with specific goals and purpose written for a target audience details are usually very important –accuracy and relevance of content –organization and layout –graphics –grammar, style, tone, spelling, punctuation, ultimately becomes a formal document – report – article – letter or memorandum is subject to review and assessment (grades)

Personal (ENGR 100) Journal –Add to it regularly during class and outside of class –Keep with you at all (almost all) times –Don't edit yourself (don't be a critic or a grader!) –Explore the territory in yourself between thought and feeling, sight and sound –Share it with your Senior Peer (as a colleague, not a grader) –Become a life-long journal keeper

Design (ENGR 100) Journal –Record ideas so another “expert” can understand them –Writing & sketching done clearly and in ink –Double space throughout –No erasing, no doubts about possible erasing –Line out, date and explain (in the margin) instead of erasing –No large blank spaces (cross hatch of something) – Be honest and candid –Sign and date every page. Have it witnessed frequently

Acquire a journal –sturdy cover –bound pages –ruled or grid –number pages Start using it –“Design half” start with name tag assignment –“Personal half” “observations on life with designed stuff”
