14 JAN 2016 BELL ACTIVITY: JOURNAL – describe how Buck has changed in the first three chapters of the book. What has he learned? Paraphrase scenes from the novel that prove he has changed or that show why he changed. Today we will learn…..the definitions of the vocabulary terms on the VOCAB LIST #2 UNPUZZLING THE WORDS FIRST RACHEL SCDORIS: What laws does she follow?

1.SOLO FRONT SIDE: You have 3-5 minutes to define or provide synonyms based on what just YOU know. 2. GROUP + TEXT BACK SIDE: Work in your groups, with the text, to fill in possible definitions or synonyms on the back side. Take turns reading the excerpts containing the vocabulary words out loud, everyone else reads along silently.

POINTS WILL BE EARNED OR LOST BASED ON HOW MANY BELIEVABLE DEFINITIONS OR SYNONYMS ARE COMPLETED USING THE TEXT. SOOOOOOO…. Use your time wisely.

RACHAEL SCDORIS PROFESSIONAL DOG SLED RACER IDITAROD COMPETITOR

RACHEL SCDORIS… Welcome to my web site! My name is Rachael Scdoris and I am a professional sled dog racer from Bend, Oregon. I was born with Congenital Achromatopsia, a rare vision disorder causing near sightedness, far sightedness and colorblindness. My dream was always to compete in the Iditarod-the world famous 1,200 mile annual race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska. As a young girl, I made the decision not to allow my visual impairment to stand in the way of my dream, and I have been racing sled dogs since I was 11 years old. I have experienced some unbelievable challenges and opportunities during my career and am grateful for both the highs and lows. I hope my story can help encourage others to pursue their dreams. See you on the trail!

1. How does Rachel adapt her behavior in order to follow the rules of dog sledding and be a successful racer.

TRANSITION YOU WILL NEED YOUR…. 1. TCOW CHARACTER & LAWS LIST 2. YOUR COPY OF TCOW 3. A HIGHLIGHTER IF YOU HAVE ONE 1. TURN YOUR DESKS BACK AROUND. 2. ONE PERSON FROM EACH TEAM, COLLECT & SUBMIT THE WORKSHEET

THE LAW OF ADAPTABILITY What do you think it is? ADD THE FOLLOWING LAW TO YOUR LIST.

THE LAW OF ADAPTABILITY…… “This first theft marked Buck as fit to survive in the hostile Northland environment. It marked his adaptability, his capacity to adjust himself to changing conditions, the lack of which would have meant swift and terrible death” (London 51). 1.In your own words, define the law of adaptability 2. Then include the quote from page 51 (up above) as textual evidence.
