The College Application A Personal Essay-Structure and Tips
Tips Length: Most colleges ask that you keep the essay words. That’s about a page to a page and a half. This is a personal essay. –That means the use of I and me (first person) is okay. –That does NOT mean the use of “you” (second person) is okay- use “one”
The Attention-Getter Very Important! First impressions here are more crucial than ever. Terrible First Sentences Hall of Fame: –“Different experiences in a person’s life are what shape who they are.” –“It is hard to pinpoint human nature.” –“Every book is made up of words.” What? Seriously- COME ON!
Structure-Introduction Usually short (you’ve only got a page): 5-6 sentences Should be used to describe the experience or introduce the influence your essay discusses Thesis: Still the last sentence of intro
Structure- Body Paragraphs Two body paragraphs –11-14 sentences Develop the idea of thesis with examples and explanation –This is your personal story, so it should show major insight into WHO YOU ARE and WHAT YOU’VE LEARNED ALONG THE WAY
Conclusion Again, short: 5-6 sentences Leave a lasting impression Incorporate the future! Tell the admissions officers why they should pick YOU: you’ll be a good student, you’ll succeed, you’ll continue doing what the essay shows about you, etc.
Examples: Thesis: Working with English Language Learners was my best part-time job in high-school Body: Watching the students suddenly grasp a new concept was invigorating… One student, Issaiah,…It gave me pride to know that I had helped him learn. Conclusion: I still remember Issaiah with a smile, but look forward to continuing to help people learn.
