Snapshot of NH Population 1,324,595 93.1% White 25% of population is 55 year or older 23% are caregiver between 55- 64 yrs & 18% are over 65 yrs 24% of population is 0-17 16.6% Children with Special Health Needs compared (13.9% nationally) > 2/3 of families of NH CSHCN report provide health care for child at home

Stress Stress in the respite provider and caregiver relationship can add stress to a caregiver- and the person that is being cared for.

Self Awareness Self-awareness gives us important knowledge about how our own reactions influence our relationship with others. Careful observations gives us important information about the unique strengths and needs of others. Flexible response helps us use this information about ourselves and others to identify next steps.

Giving and Receiving Information Our attitudes, beliefs, and values Influences our relationships in important ways Based on personal histories and experiences, interpretation of messages maybe different than you intended and vise versa. Lets talk if responses are a puzzle.

Assessing Needs and Resources for CSHCN in NH 2004 Provider Training Limited number of respite providers are available and the need is great. Respite providers who know and understand specific expectations before they begin will be more likely to commit to staying “Experience has shown that even limited training for providers can greatly improve the quality of care for an individual with special needs”
