When a foreign microbe infects you for the first time ever, which correctly describes the order of events of an immune response (1) Memory of antigen Recognition of antigen Production of antibodies (2) Recognition of antigen Memory of antigen Production of antibodies (3) Recognition of antigen Production of antibodies Memory of antigen (4) Production of antibodies Memory of antigen Recognition of antigen
3
Immune response
6
Even though the donated tissue or organ is supposed to help you, the immune system still reacts to its foreign antigens…
7
Drugs to reduce the risk of rejection are given to organ transplant patients because the donated organ contains (1) foreign antigens (2) foreign antibodies (3) DNA molecules (4) pathogenic microbes Identification proteins on cell membranes!
9
Did you ever meet this guy?
10
When you are infected, your body learns how to fight the pathogen. “recognizes and reacts” Once it learns it will know how to fight the infection in the future. “remembers” If we “show” your body the infection maybe it can recognize and remember without even getting sick.
11
Purify small amount of “dead” or weak germ. Administer vaccination. Grow the germs (viruses) of interest. Body has immune response and develops IMMUNITY without getting ill.
12
Vaccines are like getting sick without ever getting sick!
13
The diagram below shows a cell in the human body engulfing a bacterial cell. The cell labeled X is most likely a (1) red blood cell (3) liver cell (2) white blood cell (4) nerve cell
