1.At the bottom of the Monomer box, write the monomer of a protein. 2.At the bottom of the Polymer box, write the polymer of a protein. 3.Draw an arrow from the monomer to the polymer. 4.On the INSIDE of the Protein door, write THREE functions and FOUR examples. 5.On the FRONT of the Protein door, draw an amino acid molecule. Be sure to label the R-group!

 The handout titled “Energy and Chemical Reactions” is HOMEWORK.  Be sure to read the paragraph carefully, and use that information to answer the questions. ALL ANSWERS CAN BE FOUND IN THE READING!!!!!!

 Set up the next page in your journal and copy the notes at your table!  Title: Enzymes  Page: 24  Date: 9-29-15  Essential question: What are enzymes?  Yes, Cornell notes!

 proteins that regulate cell processes ◦ help maintain homeostasis ◦ work best in specific conditions (temperature, pH, etc.)  biological catalysts ◦ catalyst: a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction  BIOLOGICAL catalysts are found in living things ◦ REDUCE the activation energy needed to start a reaction  activation energy: how much energy it takes to start a reaction

 very specific ◦ perform specialized jobs ◦ have particular shapes that only fit with particular substrates (like a lock and key)  substrate: a chemical that binds with an enzyme and is changed  named for their job ◦ names end in –ase ◦ EXAMPLES:  lactase (breaks down lactose)  DNA polymerase (creates DNA polymers)  protease (breaks down protein)

DRAW THIS!! (reactants)

Lab Time! Fill your beaker with your liquid of choice. Send ONE person to get hot water from me if needed. You may use your phone as a timer. The tablet is dissolved when there are no white pieces on top of the liquid (it will still be bubbly). Use your best judgement. Draw a pictoral representation of your procedure (see the example on the side board). Collect and fill in your data. Fill in your Conclusion (see side board). Pour your liquid down the sink and rinse your beaker. Analysis will be done TOGETHER!

I will give you another group’s data. Write the OTHER GROUP’S information as indicated on your paper. Be sure to answer which of you had the best results (i.e. the fastest time) and WHY you think that happened. Now, use what you learned about enzymes to answer the last question! Your paper is due BEFORE YOU LEAVE TODAY.
