“Parks within a Park” – contiguous habitat and recreation areas
95% of San Diegans surveyed responded that the importance of preserving and enhancing natural resources in Mission Bay Park was very important (70%) or important (25%).
52.2 % favor taking areas of the Park out of active public use for natural preservation/enhancement
MBPark MP 2002 p.32: “… natural habitat areas should be consolidated to the extent possible so that their wildlife, mitigation, water quality improvement, and recreational functions can perform synergistically, maximizing their value to the Park. “
p. 83: “• This Plan proposes a substantial expansion of wetland areas immediately adjacent to the Northern Wildlife Preserve
• Expansion of upland preserves are proposed …, potentially, in DeAnza Point and other upland areas associated with the wetland expansion adjacent to the Northern Wildlife Preserve. “

Mission Bay wetlands have experienced reduced area, primary productivity, carbon sequestration, water filtration, and wildlife support values over the past 200 years
Anticipated sea level rise (3cm per decade)
Additional opportunities are needed for passive recreation and environmental interpretation in Mission Bay Park
