1 CERN School of Computing CSC 2015 Feedback Nikos Kasioumis Giuseppe Lo Presti

2 CERN School of Computing The Feedback Questionnaire  Format evolution  From a custom form… (2013)  …to Google docs… (2014, tCSC)  …to Indico (2015)  Still to be improved  Indico brand new feature  Missing the ability to store partial answers  This year, we opened the questionnaire at the end of the School, for one week  “only” ~70% of the students replied

3 CERN School of Computing Some results  General score of the School  Among the highest, confirming the trend of the past years

4 CERN School of Computing Some results  Global trends for the lectures and the exercises  All details per lecture/exercise in the report

5 CERN School of Computing General comments  I would like to see the exam questions and correct answers, in order to know what I got wrong  It would be better if we got documents to read up on beforehand, and then let the time with the lecturers be filled with discussions of fundamental concepts. Preferably they should also be accompanied by small tests, like in Andreas' exercise sessions.  Have some reading to do beforehand.

6 CERN School of Computing Comments on the Scientific Programme  Too much…  Content about physics. People from IT were very lost…  Data technologies  Not enough…  Networking. I think it should be more compatible with IT and physics people  Data Analysis / MVA

7 CERN School of Computing Comments on the Exercises  Reduce the number of exercises in order to let the students focus for more time on the meaning of an exercise […]  Personally I would like enforcing a change of the student pairs for every set of exercises or perhaps after the 1st week.  […] I think a better solution could be to make the two in the team work each one in a computer and interact in order to solve doubts and problems. In this way each partner has the opportunity to work on the exercises, and compare with the partner for doubts and results.  […] My suggestion would be to maybe stress a bit more from the very beginning the importance of probing the lecturers in order to make the most out of them.

8 CERN School of Computing The CSC Virtual Appliance  A specific question about it – or its non-usage  50% of the students used the VM, 50% didn’t  Very good experience overall  More details in Nikos’ slides
