3.  In “The Struggle to be an All-American Girl,” there are many examples of the narrator coming of age. For example, she finally understands why she should value her own culture. This reflects coming of age by showing how she matures and understands her culture. At first, she wants nothing to do with it, but by the end she wishes she had appreciated more when growing up. Another example is learning that being an American is not perfect. She realizes that being Chinese is part of her heritage and a part of her and that trying to be more American will not make her life perfect. During the story the narrator matures and learns about herself, which makes coming of age a good theme for the story.

4.  In “The Struggle to be an All-American Girl,” there are many examples of the narrator coming of age. For example, the narrator states “after two years… I was finally granted a cultural divorce.” This is an example because it says that she was smarter and getting older. She worked hard for two years and finally got what she wanted, which was quitting Chinese school. Another example is “at last, I was one of you; I wasn’t one of them.” This shows coming of age because it shows her maturing by learning that her origin will forever be Chinese. She has grown up and realized that even though she wanted to get away from her culture, she can’t and she should have valued it. The narrator’s maturity and learning throughout the story prove that a theme of the story is coming of age.
