All About Pressure in Fluids
2
Pressure… Pressure is the application of force to a surface. Pressure is the application of force to a surface. An example of applying pressure – Punching a wall or blowing into a balloon. An example of applying pressure – Punching a wall or blowing into a balloon. What are your examples of pressure? What are your examples of pressure?
3
How is pressure calculated? Pressure can be calculated using the following formula: Pressure can be calculated using the following formula: Pressure (P) = Force (F) Area (A) Area (A) OR P = F A A
4
How is Pressure Measured? Remember from Chapter 5 that force is measured in NEWTONS! Symbol = N Remember from Chapter 5 that force is measured in NEWTONS! Symbol = N Also remember that area is measured in METERS 2 ! Symbol = m 2 Also remember that area is measured in METERS 2 ! Symbol = m 2 The unit for measuring pressure is, therefore, N / m 2 or Pascal (Pa) The unit for measuring pressure is, therefore, N / m 2 or Pascal (Pa)

Test Your Knowledge!! a)Suppose that an aquarium has a weight of 10,000 N and an area of 1m 3. Determine the pressure exerted by the aquarium of water (in pascals and kilopascals).
6
Answer P = F = 10,000N = 10,000 Pa or 10kPa P = F = 10,000N = 10,000 Pa or 10kPa A 1m 2 A 1m 2
