Chemistry of Life

Elements and Compounds Atoms are the smallest unit of matter that cannot be broken down. An element is a substance made up of atoms – Examples: oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, hydrogen A compound is a substance made of two or more atoms bonded together.

Acids and Bases Acids are compounds that form extra hydronium ions (H+) in water. Bases are compounds that form extra hydroxide (OH-) ions in water pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is, ranging from 1 to 10

Draw the pH scale in your notes

Check for Understanding Which pH would be considered to be “normal” range?

the normal blood pH is tightly regulated between 7.35 and 7.45. Anything out of this range can affect how chemical reactions happen in the body (out of homeostasis)

Elements of Life The most common element in living things is CARBON (C).

Organic vs. Inorganic Compounds Organic Compounds contain carbon and hydrogen. – Example: C 6 H 12 O 6 (glucose) Inorganic Compounds do not contain carbon and hydrogen. – H 2 O (water), O 2 (oxygen)
