BY: VINCE VARANO POST REVOLUTION

REVOLUTION In 1979 Mohammed Reza Pahlavi (the Shah, or king, at the time) fled the country during political unrest. Formerly exiled leader of the movement against the monarchy, Ruhollah Khomeini, returned at that time to establish the Islamic Republic of Iran. The new leadership focused very seriously on the religion of Islam.

CHANGE IN IRAN In 1981, a group of radicals seized the US Embassy in Iran. After this happened the US cut all ties with Iran and imposed trade sanctions. This crippled the government’s economy and sent them into a economic downfall. With an economic downturn and a new relentless governing body, Iran soon became an underdeveloped and hopeless nation.

SCHOOLS The Iranian school system is structured like that of the United States. The teaching of Islam is required in all schools. Instead of Universities they go to a three year, upper-secondary school where they choose from three different career pathways: vocational, professional, or theoretical.

RELIGION The Iranian religion is Islam. It is illegal to practice any other religion and it has been this way since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.

FAMILY AND SOCIAL STRUCTURE The father is the undisputed head of the household Mothers take care of children and maintain the house Women are now becoming more independent after having all of their rights stripped away after the Revolution but men are still dominant in society

WORLD EFFECTS Since the Islamic Revolution, the leaders of Iran have treated their citizens poorly. This has caused most countries to pull their support of Iran. Recently, Iran has been trying to produce nuclear weapons, causing nations around the world to want to annihilate the country before they can use the weapons. Their former president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, offended and threatened many nations during his time in office.
