State Lab Making Connections
2
In this lab you will : Make observations about yourself and others Learn to take and calculate your pulse! Predict what effect exercising has on your muscles Compare those observations Compare and combine your results with the classes results Make connections between your data and the human body Circulatory system – exercising – pulse rate Circulatory system – exercising – muscle fatigue
3
Do Now Questions on Back of Immunity Packet 1.Identify one disease that damages the immune system and state how it affects this system. 2.Describe the response of the immune system to the vaccine. 3.Identify the substance in a vaccine that stimulates the immune system
4
Part A1 What is your pulse rate? Measure your pulse rate (how many times heart beats in 1 minute) 1.Count the number of pulses you can feel in 20 seconds 2.Multiply that number by 3 – To determine how many beats your heart would beat in 60 seconds (1min) 3.Wait 1 minute, and measure your pulse again (total of 3 times)
5
Part A1 Find the average heart-rate 1.Pulse should be about the same each time 2.Calculate your average pulse 1.Add up all 3 pulses 2.Then divide by 3 3.Your answer is your average pulse
6
Class Results : Average Pulse Rate
7
Create a Histogram (bar graph)

Do Now Questions on Back of Immunity Packet 4.Identify one way the immune system fights pathogens

Part A2 How Does Fatigue Affect Muscle Performance? A condition known as muscle fatigue occurs when certain waste products of muscle cell activity build up in the cells. Until these waste chemicals are removed, the fatigue will continue.

Part A2 Activity: Hold clothespin between your thumb and index finger You will use these same two fingers for the whole experiment Pinch the ends together for 1 minute as many times as you can! When I say go… Don’t start early… you might wear yourself out! Record the number of times you could squeeze the clothespin
