WRITING A REPORT

WHAT IS IT? A written description of an event, a place, habits etc. Similar to a description or a review. It gives factual information (description) first and adds a personal comment (opinion, suggestion, recommendation) in the CONCLUSION

ITS STRUCTURE You should make it clear it is a report, 1. so start with a heading. REPORT ON … SUBJECT: REPORT ON… OR 2. start with a sentence that makes it clear you are writing a report E.g.. As you requested I am writing this report to depict accommodation, food and activities that I had here in the camp.

GIVING INFORMATION Then divide it into paragraphs (preferably with headings) to show what kind of information the reader will find E.g.. ACCOMMODATION: You promised a cabin with a bathroom but we had to stay in a tent… FOOD: All the meals were delicious and this is a big advantage for the camp… If you decide not to use headings, you should make it perfectly clear what you are writing about. Accommodation was certainly not what you had promised… Food in the camp was delicious and we had …

CONCLUSION: -Give a balanced assessment if possible -Do not repeat what has already been written in previous paragraphs -Add a personal comment (opinion, suggestion, recommendation)

USEFUL TIPS 1. Read the instructions carefully (what are the content points in the prompt?). 2. It should be obvious who the reader is (the camp leader, students…). 3. Use formal style (register is important). 4. Use suitable linking words and phrases. 5. Leave your main opinions for the conclusion. 6. Reread the report when it is written.
