2 Ominous: (page 190) Adjective If you describe something as ominous, you mean that it worries you because it makes you think that something unpleasant or scary is going to happen Ex: There was an ominous silence at the other end of the phone.

3 Promontory: (page 191) Noun A promontory is a cliff that stretches out into the sea. Ex: The waves splashed below as I stood at the end of the promontory.

4 Vagabond: (page 196) A vagabond is someone who wanders from place to place and has no home or job. Ex: A cold and hungry vagabond stopped by my house on Thanksgiving to ask for some food.

5 Enmity (p. 197) Enmity is a feeling of hatred toward someone that lasts for a long time. ■ EX: I think there is an historic enmity between the Chiefs and the Raiders.

6 Disembarked (p. 202) When passengers disembark from a ship, airplane, or bus, they leave it at the end of their trip. ■ EG: ⇒ I looked toward the plane. Six passengers had already disembarked.

7 Waning (p. 203) If something wanes, it becomes gradually weaker or less, often so that it eventually disappears. ■ EG: ⇒ While his interest in these sports began to wane, a passion for lacrosse developed.
