Demographics of Manitoba, 1870 Equal mix of French-speaking Catholics and English- speaking Protestants. Because of Manitoba Act, the province had tow publicly funded denominational school system.

Educational Reform Legislation Official languages act (1890) – Made English only official language in MB An Act Respecting the Department of Education – Replaced existing dual system An Act Respecting Public Schools – Only English, non-religious schools funded

Laurier-Greenway Compromise, 1897 Prime Minister Laurier and Premier Greenway worked together towards a compromise.

Manitoba Schools Act, 1897 Single public school system If enough Catholic students, Catholic teacher could be hired Teachers don’t provide religious instruction- has to be priest and not all students required to attend Bilingual- if enough students spoke another language, instruction could be provided in that language.
