2 You will learn about careers in carpentry in this book. Carpentry is the biggest of all building jobs. Carpentry relates to building and fixing things using all kinds of tools.

This book will help you with carpentry words found in this package. Read the words from Activity 1, then do Activity 1. Then, read the words from Activity 2 and do Activity 2. Work through the entire book this way. 3

Carpenters have a lot of skills. Carpenters work with wood, plywood and wallboard. Carpenters build and fix things. 4

5 Carpenters use both hand tools and power tools. Hand tools are simple tools that do not run on batteries or electricity. Power tools run on batteries or plug into electrical outlets. Some run on gas.

Carpenter helpers assist or help carpenters with their work. A carpenter helper works side by side with the carpenter doing the same things. A carpenter helper also helps with cleaning up work areas and tools. 6

Some carpenter helpers become carpenters later. Carpenter helpers can do many kinds of jobs. 7

Fasteners hook or join materials together. There are many kinds of fasteners. Carpenter helpers work to fasten materials together. 9

BE SAFE ! Fasteners can be sharp. Handle them carefully. 10

Types of fasteners include: Screw - A screw is made up of a head and a shaft. There are threads on the shaft of a screw. 11 Head Shaft Threads

Nail - A nail has a head and a shaft, too. The shaft of a nail is smooth. It’s different from a screw. 12 Head Shaft

Bolt - A bolt is used with a washer and a nut. The washer and the nut go on the bolt to help it hold material together. 13 Nuts Washers Bolt

14 To sort fasteners means to put them into piles or drawers so that each group is kept together. Keeping fasteners sorted into groups makes work easier and faster! NOW DO ACTIVITY ONE!
