3
Security and Shelter Providing students with a physically safe environment, protecting them from bad weather, distracting noises, or extreme conditions. While also establishing a safe and welcoming feel to the classroom, promoting psychological security.
4
Security and Shelter In Twin Hickory Elementary, every classroom has “THES Rules Against Bullying” which promotes a cooperative and caring classroom environment. It also encourages students to take responsibility for their actions. In Mrs. Kerr’s second grade classroom, students have “offices” they set up during assessments or whenever the child wants more privacy to work.
5
Social Contact How student to student interaction is facilitated. As well as student to teacher interaction and how this effects the learning process.
6
Social Contact Mrs. Kerr’s main teaching style uses many group activities and center work, so her classroom is set up to promote collaborative work among her students. She has arranged the students desks in four small groups and has a semi- circle table for when she works with small groups.
7
Symbolic Identification Personalization of the classroom, or how the classroom represents the students and the teacher.
8
Symbolic Identification All around Mrs. Kerr’s room you can see her students’ work proudly hanging. She also has a Birthday Wall recognizing each child’s special day and displays their picture.
9
Task Instrumentality How the physical set up of the classroom helps facilitate the flow of activities and daily routine.
10
Task Instrumentality Mrs. Kerr keeps her classroom very organized. One strategy she uses is assigning each student with a number. That number marks their cubbies, mailboxes, coat hangers, and is included on their desk name tag.
11
Pleasure Additional components that add to the visual appeal of classroom, creating a pleasing and comfortable environment.
12
Pleasure Mrs. Kerr’s classroom is decorated with many bright colors and soft accents that make the class visually appealing without being over stimulating. She also provides students with a comfortable reading corner that includes bean bag chairs, rugs and pillows.
13
Growth Any supplementary material that promotes students’ academic learning and cognitive development.
14
Growth To provide open opportunities for students to further their learning, Mrs. Kerr has a variety of equipment that is both fun and educational. There is a reading corner with a large library and a collection of strategy games and puzzles. She also created an impressive STEM(Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) center.
