The Titanic Technical Advancements: The Cost of Progress? The Cost of Progress? Transport by Sea: The Titanic
2
Lesson Objectives To understand the technological problems that caused the Titanic to sink. Use evidence decide which was the most important reason.
3
Bruce IsmayIgnored several ice berg warnings from his crew and other ships. Captain SmithDesigned the “watertight” compartments- allowed them not to go all the way up the ship to allow more first class living space. Ship buildersManaging director of the White Star Line- put pressure on the Captain to maintain high speeds. Thomas AndrewMany of the parts that were used in the titanic have been analysed and have been found to be poor quality. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TswFzWTv 7qc

Technological Faults Last lesson we discussed human error and how that led to the tragedy. This lesson we are going to focus on the technological faults that caused the Titanic to sink.
5
How did it get from this….. … to this?
6
Three Technological Arguments There are three key arguments that highlight the technological faults that caused the Titanic to sink. 1)Materials Used 2)Manoeuvrability of the ship 3)“Water-tight” compartments
7
1. Material used Hull of the ship and the rivets: Reports that the materials used were weak and not of a high standard.
8
2. Manoeuvrability of the ship Due to the sub-standard rudder and speed that the ship was travelling at the Titanic was unable to move out of the way of the ice-berg.
9
3. “Watertight” compartments These compartments were designed to be watertight, in fact they simply filled up with water and caused greater damage to the ship.
10
Investigation As a class you are going to investigate these three core ideas You will be put in groups of 4-5 and given an evidence folder You need to study the evidence and create an argument as to why the cause you have been given is the main reason why the Titanic sank. You need to be able to present your convincing argument to the class as we will hold a class vote.GOOD LUCK
