In groups discuss and take notes on each advert Describe in detail in groups of 3/4 the images you see. You will need to make notes and be prepared to share your ideas with the rest of the class. This is a speaking and listening assessment (explain, describe and narrate).

Presentation and Layout: Image Describe the images: are they photographs or graphics (cartoons/drawings/paintings)? What is the size of the image in relationship to any text? How does the image link with the text? What race and gender are the people? What effect does this have? Do the people look at the reader or away from the camera? What effect does this have? What distance are they from the camera?

Presentation and Layout: Print Describe the writing on the page. Describe the logo (colour/font/contrasts in font). Describe the slogan. Describe the style of writing: Are different styles used? Why? Describe the colours used and their effect.

Presentation and Layout: Organisation How has the advert been arranged on the page? What effect does this have? How does this help you to understand the meaning of the advert?

Uses of Language How long are the sentences of text? Why? What person is used? Has rhetoric been used? Has repetition been used? Has emotive language been used? What is the effect of the language?

Purpose and Audience What is the intention of the advert? To shock? To amuse? To persuade? To move and make the reader sad? To entertain? To make the reader think? To sell a product? To sell a political view? To raise awareness of an issue or organisation? A combination of these? Who is it aimed at?

Summary Which adverts does your group like the most and which do you think is most successful? Why? What do you think is the message of each advert?
