The Cell Cycle Ms. Napolitano & Mrs. Haas CP Biology
2
The Cell Cycle The cell cycle – series of events that cells go through as they grow and divide Made of two parts: 1.Interphase 1.G 1 phase 2.S phase 3.G 2 phase 2.M phase 1.Mitosis 2.Cytokinesis
3
Interphase Interphase – the period between divisions Cell growth Majority of the cell cycle Preparation for division Contains the G 1, S, & G 2 phases
4
G 1 Phase G = “Gap” Majority of cell growth Increase in cell size Make new proteins & organelles
5
S Phase S = “Synthesis” DNA replicated Synthesis of DNA molecules *NOTE: Chromosomes not actually present yet!
6
G 2 Phase Shortest of interphase Organelles produced for cell division Transitions from here to mitosis
7
M Phase … to be continued!
