Intercostal muscles contract to increase lung capacity; Diaphragm contracts

Exhaling Carbon Dioxide is forced out from the lungs Passive
Intercostal muscle relax; Diaphragm relaxes, moves upward & pushes air out Only requires energy when a respiratory disease is present
