P ARENTING S TYLES Authoritarian – parents are the boss Democratic – parents are in charge, but kids have opinions and can make some decisions on their own. Permissive – parents guide, children make final decision. Uninvolved – egocentric parents

S OCIALIZATION The process of learning the rules of behavior of the culture within which an individual is born and will live. Learning to live with other people.

F REUD ’ S T HEORY Identification – a child adopts the values and principles of the same-sex parent. Sublimation – redirecting sexual impulses into learning tasks.

E RICKSON ’ S T HEORY Psychosocial Development – life periods in which an individual’s goal is to satisfy desires associated with social needs. There are 8 stages You are in stage 5 – “Identity vs. role confusion”

K OHLBERG ’ S MORAL DEVELOPMENT Problem – man’s wife is dying. Stage 1 – avoid punishment. “it’s okay to steal, just don’t get caught. Stage 2 – rewards and punishments – stealing the drugs helps his wife. Stage 3 – social approval – people will respect him if he helps his wife. Stage 4 – law and order – it’s illegal to steal Stage 5 – social contract – its OK to steal because the price is crazy. Stage 6 – Universal Ethics (Golden Rule) – if the situation was reversed would the druggist steal from the man?
