Investigating Density
2
What is Density? Density is the amount of matter in a given space Measured in grams per milliliter or g/mL We discussed that cold air is more dense than warm air because the molecules are more tightly packed Cold air is more dense than warm air, so it sinks

Coke versus Diet Coke Demonstration 1: Coke vs. Diet Coke http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzsORE0ae10 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzsORE0ae10 Hypothesis: Which can of soda will be more dense? ____________________________ Why do you think this? ________________________________________________ Data (What happens when we test it?): Why did this happen?

Density Problems Find the Density of the Diet Coke Find the Density of the Sprite
5
Warm Up 1.Draw a picture of warm air and of cold air that shows that warm air is less dense than cold air. 2.Find the density of water if 50 mL of water has a mass of 50 g. 3.Find the mass of a piece of aluminum if the volume is 5 cm 3. Hint - Look at homework question #3!

Egg Float Demonstration 2: Eggs in Water http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tdaovq2oCNo Hypothesis: In which water will the egg float (salt water or fresh water)? Why do you think this? ________________________________________________ Data: Why did this happen?

Density Warm Up How do you find density of an object, such as a rock? What is displacement volume and how do you find it? What are the possible units for volume?
