March 2010, V1.0 Scholaris is a browser-based education software solution that delivers: Information Interaction Collaboration for all members of a school community

 A school-level vision ◦ And a technology vision that dovetails  A single technology tool or vehicle with multiple entry points for early to late adopters  Change-facilitating behaviour ◦ Adopted by leaders, experienced by all  Change strategies ◦ Pilots, coaching & mentoring The essentials: a technology change ‘kit’

 Easy entry points  Consistent behaviour  Development pathway (simple to complex) ◦ Entry points for early to late adopters  Adaptability (make it my own)  Leading to systematic teaching and learning practice that engages staff, students and parents How Scholaris facilitates change:

March 2010, V1.0 Scholaris runs on a framework of o Sharepoint 2007 o Active Directory Services o SQL Server o ISA Server

…through improved access and integration to information © 2008 Copyright Scholaris International

Scholaris also integrates with backend systems, here is an example of integration with the MIS system – to produce the teacher timetable

Here we can provide teachers with access to items such as student alerts – for example: Medical

Ability to message all students within the class, no more post-it notes and paperwork. We have seen this used for reminder notices through to distributing announcements and for fostering communication with the class

Teachers are also able to view other teacher timetables, great for relief teachers

Schools are able to target news, events and links based on the role of the user

Schools can now centrally manage documents and set access across the entire community, including parents and other external users. For example parents could access school policy documents

No more burning to USB drives or CD’s users can now access their personal workspace or shared workspaces via the web anywhere, anytime

Contact Info provides more detailed information such as all relationships with the student. For example most common would be Mum, Dad but could be Doctor, councillor, etc

One of the smallest but most widely used features is the ability for teachers to simply click and message other teachers of a particular student. Even teachers that may not be comfortable with IT find this extremely useful as it is more efficient and time saving than the traditional way of searching timetables, writing notes and placing them into staff pigeon holes.

Alerts can also be communicated to parents

Teachers can filter to view history and progress across multiple classes, subjects and strands.

Portfolio provides an area of work completed by the student, it is separated into two zones: Automatic selections are the activities and assignments that are automatically recorded when finalised through the learning system Student selections shows the work that the students have uploaded

Teachers can now view workload of a student across all classes by seeing a graphical representation of the start and end dates of assignment and activities. This allows teachers to determine the best time to assign work

Schools can now centrally manage documents and set access across the entire community, including parents and other external users. For example parents could access school policy documents

Workspaces provide teachers with a rich toolset to collaborate and communicate with their class with minimal technical expertise © 2008 Copyright Scholaris International

Teachers can instantly generate and manage blogs, wikis, surveys, document libraries, discussion boards etc to use within the classroom © 2008 Copyright Scholaris International

To create virtual classrooms is only a matter of a few clicks; again, feedback provided to us is that teachers want a simple way of creating a workspace for only their students, so Scholaris offers a step-by-step wizard.

Add the Assignments web part to integrate the learning activities.

The wizard even helps users to add Blogs, Wikis and Discussion Boards

The Learning Object Repository allows schools and teachers to put learning resources under management where they can be shared and supports a wide range of content types, including SCORM

Teaching is cyclic in nature. Scholaris was founded on the basis of a 5 step cycle of learning. There are a few key requirements; Teachers needed the ability to start at any stage, so to assign some content they do not always need to plan and/or build courses. Teachers needed the ability to leverage existing content – nobody likes re-making resources! Not all teaching is electronic – Scholaris caters for excursions, observation, paper-based assessment and other forms of learning
