4 Election of 1824 John Quincy Adams wins Defeats – Andrew Jackson – Henry Clay – W. H. Crawford

5 Corrupt Bargain- Election of 1824 Days later, Adams makes Clay Secretary of State John C. Calhoun becomes Vice President Jackson’s followers are enraged!

6 John C. Calhoun Wealthy slave owner from S.Carolina Early on he was a Nationalist – Created second bank, road system, and tariffs to protect business Turns to defending the South and slavery until his death, 1850 “The South! The poor South!”

7 President John Quincy Adams Wants justice for natives, but congress defeated his request Wants to strengthen economy – Policies exceeded Clay’s American System – Protective tariffs (Tariff of Abominations) – Internal improvements and universities Jackson supporters stop Adams
