The alkali metals are the first row of the periodic table. They are all metals with the exception of Hydrogen In general they have a shinny silvery color, they are soft, and have low melting and boiling points.

Hydrogen(H) Hydrogen is the only element of the Alkali elements that is not a metal. Hydrogen has only one valence electron. Hydrogen is a gas a room temperature It can be used to make hydrogen peroxide Physical Properties: Gas Cannot be seen by human eye. Very reactive

1 [He]2s 1 Lithium has only one valence electron Lithium is a solid at room temperature. Lithium is used in batteries Physical Properties: It’s a metal Has a low melting point Has a low boiling point Reactive with water and oxygen

[Ne]3s1 Sodium has one valence electron Sodium is a solid at room temperature Sodium is used a preservative in meat and dairy products Physical Properties: Is a metal Has a silvery color Has a small density

Potassium(K) [Ar]4s1 Potassium has one valence electron Potassium is a solid at room temperature Potassium is a mineral that is necessary in the human body for healthy function. Physical Properties: Has a dull silvery color Has a low density Has low melting and boiling point Is very reactive with oxygen!

Rubidium(Rb) [Kr]5s1 Rubidium has one valence electron Rubidium is a solid at room temperature Rubidium is used in vacuum tube and in electronic materials. Physical Properties: Metal Low melting and boiling point Very soft Is reactive with water and oxygen

[Xe]6s1 Cesium has on valence electron Is a liquid at room temperature Cesium is added to the center of light bulbs Physical Properties: Silvery color Soft Reactive with oxygen

Francium(Fr) [Rn]7s1 Francium has one valence electron Francium is a solid at room temperature Francium really has no practical use but it used in lab research. Physical Properties: Silvery color Soft Low melting and boiling point Reacts with oxygen
