2  The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was the result of the experience of the Second World War.  The international community vowed never again to allow atrocities like those of WW2 to happen again.

3  In addition to the creation of the UN, world leaders decided to complement the Charter with a document to guarantee the rights of every individual everywhere.  Later the work was taken over by a formal drafting committee, consisting of members of the Commission from eight States, selected with due regard for geographical distribution.

4  As the chair of the United Nations Human Rights Commission, Eleanor Roosevelt was the driving force in creating the 1948 charter of liberties which will always be her legacy: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962)

5  Following this act, the Assembly called upon all Member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration and “to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories.”
