2 Language Arts Curriculum Mrs. Stein Writing: Informative/Explanatory, Narratives, Argumentative Writing Literature 6 th Grade: Jason’s Gold 7 th Grade: Glory Road, The Outsiders 8 th Grade: Devil’s Arithmetic All grade levels: Prentice Hall Literature books Focus on Common Core Curriculum (standards for Literature, Informational Reading, and Writing)

3 6 th Grade Enrichment Mr. Salembier and Mrs. Maksuta Writing (20 week course) First 10 weeksSecond 10 weeks Six traits of good writingStudents will write a variety Writing processof papers using different Sentence varietytext structures Write strong paragraphs-Cause & Effect Five paragraph essay-Compare/Contrast -Argumentative -Sequencing

4 7 th Grade Enrichment Ms. Negovan Focus on writing (10 weeks) write every day write strong paragraphs support their writing with evidence Write in a variety of text structures review and practice the writing process Practice writing using the six traits

5 Media Center Mrs. Phillips Check out once a week 3 items for 3 weeks Fines: 10 cents per day Day of the Week determined by Teacher Reading materials necessary for S.S.R. Magazines, newspapers, novels, non fiction, and Kindles acceptable for S.S.R.

6 Sentence of the Week Mr. Wrobel Introduction and review of grammar concepts and/or literary devices Daily Bell Work Take Home Practice (THP) Assigned Monday, due the following Monday Wednesday Checks (Summative Assessments)

7 Take Home Practice (THP) Mrs. Bennett Assigned every other Monday Due the following Monday Daily Practice Grade (10%) Completion of Take Home Practice will give students review for the Wednesday Check which is a Summative Assessment.

8 2013-14 Grading Policy Mrs. Mulder 90% of student grades – Summative Assessment grades LA Summative Assessments can be: Tests Wednesday Checks Speeches Final Papers (essays, Article of Week reflections, etc) Individual Projects *Students will ALWAYS be told in advance what will be a summative assessment. Summative assessments cannot be retaken 10% of student grades Formative Assessments Daily Practice *This portion of student grades is designed to prepare students for their Summative Assessments. Formative assessments can be retaken. Daily Practice cannot be redone.

9 Late Work: Daily Practice Mrs. Ebert Assignments not turned in will earn a ZERO Daily Practice assignments may be turned in for late credit Cut off date is the Monday after the assignment is due and recorded in Power School After Monday cut off, the assignment remains a ZERO Late Work is graded, then reduced by 10% ie a “B” is reduced to a “C”

10 Retakes Mr. Czartoryski Summative Assessments cannot be retaken Formative Assessments can be retaken Retake procedure: Make corrections Students explain mistakes/justify corrections Retakes are scheduled by the teacher

11 Strategies for Success Be an involved parent! Keep yourself informed of your child’s progress Be a role model Read a variety of materials at home so your child sees the importance of reading Talk to your child Ask him/her what is happening at school. Ask your child to explain what is being read and written about at school Provide enrichment opportunities Take your child to the library, museums, etc.

12 Strategies for Success Students need to be active in their learning Stay organized Complete work on time Take advantage of retakes Ask questions in class Put forth full effort and pay attention in class Study/review their class material Get enough sleep and eat breakfast
