Morocco

What to expect… An early morning…. – Wake up around 5:30 – Depart the hotel by 7am – Ferry across the The Strait of Gibraltar

What to expect…. From the ferry we will take a bus to the Moroccan town Medina we are visiting. *NOTE* Border Patrol will take our passports and hold onto them for the duration of our trip. This is normal! (border patrol may have machine guns) If you do want to buy – don’t take the first price! We will talk extensively about how to haggle (And they do take Euros!)

What to expect… People selling in the bazaar will probably be very pushy – you can be firm with saying no. Smile and say, “Thank you, no, no, no” – it’s just their culture. The local people living in Morocco will be called to prayer several times a day. This will be something you’ve never experienced and something you may never see again in your life.

The Bazaar We will see a carpet making demonstration – that will be kind of cool. Carpets are one of their largest exports. It will be busy! There will be any people everywhere! We will have extra EF people with us because streets are tiny and it’s easy to get lost – they will make sure we don’t They will want to sell you everything! They may grab your arm to lead you to their shop – this is normal. Just say, “No Thank you with a smile and walk away” (place your hand up as you say it)

The Bazaar You may see: – Clothing, jewelry, spices, food, meat Meat = full animal heads = pig heads, goat heads etc. (similar to our markets here) – Carpets, pots The spaces will be: – Most likely tight

What to wear? Conservative clothing! This is a very modest country, so it is important to respect the culture. Just like we have to cover our shoulders going into a cathedral, we have to respect the culture going into the country in Morocco.

What to wear… Options for Girls: – Long flowy dresses – Long flowy skirts (below the knee) – Capris (cotton/linen) – Tee shirts (baby tees are fine) – Closed toed shoes are a MUST – DO NOT wear sandals in this country. The streets and bazaar are gross with the amount of walking we are doing!

What to wear… Options for Boys – T-shirts – Cotton or linen pants are best – Shorts that are longer (knees) – Closed toed shoes

What others have said… This was the most impactful part of their trip. They were able to see a culture and religion they would have never been able to see! Spaniards are very similar in lifestyle to us, but this is going to be very different and exciting! This is the part of the trip I’m the most excited about!

Squatty Potty

How to Use Squat Toilets Roll up pant legs to avoid splatter. It’s a much shallower bowl than a Western toilet. Or take your pants off completely and hang them over the door. Don't lose your wallet and change in your back pocket while in squatting position... it won't be fun trying to retrieve it. Take everything out of your back pockets. Position feet shoulder width apart around the hole. They are typically extended portions of the porcelain for your feet that are ribbed so you don’t slip.

How to Use Squat Toilets cont. Squat down with FLAT feet till your thighs almost touch calves. Don’t attempt a high seated squat or your legs will be on fire half way through. It’s surprisingly comfortable once you get used to it. Stay on FLAT feet - don’t attempt to balance on your toes or you may tip forward or backwards. Spread your feet wider if you find yourself toppling. Relieve yourself (not sure if I needed to include this step!) Clean up with provided water or bring your own TP. Some places will have a hose or a bucket of water. I prefer to bring my own TP. Toss a cup of water into the hole to flush.

TIPS More developed areas have Western toilets, but be prepared for squat toilets just in case. Never throw TP in a squat toilet. Use the trash. Always carry TP if you don’t want to use water. Never head into a WC without Kleenex or wet wipes. You'll rarely find toilet paper. Bring hand sanitizer; soap is sometimes non- existent. There's often a single cloth towel that who knows how many people have already used. Don’t touch it!

Note: Moroccans eat with their right hands The left hand is used for -- ahem -- other things. How to use a squat toilet: http://goafrica.about.com/od/healthandsafety/ ht/squattoilet.htm

Etiquette It’s gross… we know…. But we have to respect the way they live. Leave a big tip if there is a toilet attendant, it's a crappy job. Please don’t make terrible faces when you walk out of the loo (bathroom). Save it for when we are not being watched by the people who live that way.

Dining Etiquette Dining etiquette for eating with your hands. Never put your hand into your mouth because you will use it again to touch the communal food. – They use their hands to gather out of communal bowls, don’t be shocked if we are expected to do so. Keep your hands out of your mouth. Utensils - Deciding which knife, fork, or spoon to use is made easier by the outside-in table manners rule – using utensils on the outside first and working your way inward.

Dining Etiquette At informal meals the dinner fork may be held tines upward, American table manners style. Passing – Always pass to your right. Pass Salt and Pepper Together. Always pass salt and pepper together. If a person asks for just one, pass both anyway.

Bread and Butter - If the bread is placed in front of you, feel free to pick up the basket, take some, and offer it to the person on your right. If the loaf is not cut, cut a few pieces, offer them to the person to your left, and then pass the basket to your right. Place the bread and butter on your butter plate - yours is on your left - then break off a bite sized piece of bread, put a little butter on it, and eat it.

Still Eating? Put your fork and knife in the center of your plate with the tips facing each other in an inverted V (slightly angled)

Finished Eating? When each course is finished: 1.Place the knife and fork parallel with the handles in the four o'clock position on the right rim of the plate; 2.The tips rest in the well of the plate in the ten o'clock position; 3.The blade of your knife should face inward; 4.This position signals to the server that you're finished. It also decreases the chance that the utensils could fall to the floor when the plates are cleared.
