Map – a picture of a particular area drawn or printed on a flat surface Globe – a 3D model of the earth’s surface Scale – compares the distance between locations on a map to the actual distance on earth Legend – part of a map that explains the symbols used to describe map features such as mountains, rivers, and valleys

Distance – the amount of space between two things Direction – the line along which anything lies, faces, or moves Grid – system of reference lines for a map; straight lines intersecting at right angles Reference map – shows the location of geographical areas, boundaries, and names

Thematic map – focus on a specific idea or theme, such as population Planimetric map – shows only the horizontal features of earth’s surface Topography map – detailed map of the features of a relatively small area Map projection – different ways of showing earth’s surface on a flat surface

Fractional distance – the length of a specific part of a line Geographic distance – distance measured along the surface of the earth Graphic distance – distance between two parts of a graph Verbal scales – distance on a map that is equal to the distance on the ground

Latitude – lines that run parallel to the equator Longitude – lines that run parallel from the North to South Pole, along the prime meridian Cardinal direction – one of the four compass points (North, South, East, West) Intermediate direction – directions between the cardinal directions (northeast, southeast, northwest, southwest)
