3 What is an antecedent? The word(s) that a pronoun stands You must use it before you can use a pronoun Ex: My aunt sold her car. aunt is the antecedent for her

4 How many types of pronouns are there? There are multiple kinds You will need to know 6 of the kinds

5 1.Personal Pronouns (think of a person) Refers to the person who is speaking, the person you are speaking to, or someone you are speaking about SingularPlural 1 st personI, mewe, us 2 nd personyouyou 3 rd personhe, she, him, itthey, them

6 2. Possessive Personal Pronouns Refers to ownership of something Sometimes they are thought of as adjectives SingularPlural 1 st personmy, mineour, ours 2 nd personyour, yoursyour, yours 3 rd personhis, hers, itstheir, theirs

7 3. Reflexive Pronouns (think reflection) Reminds you of the sentence’s subject All have the word “self” in them Ex: They chose new books for themselves. 8 4. Intensive Pronouns (think intense) Reminds you of the sentence’s subject but is NOT necessary If you want to be intense, you can include them. Or, they could be deleted. Ex: The award will be presented to the principal herself. The award will be presented to the princpal. Demonstrative Pronouns (think demonstrate) Demonstrate what specific person, place, thing, or idea someone is talking about SingularPlural this, that these, those Be careful not to confuse them with demonstrative adjectives. Note the difference: This is a delicious apple. (pronoun) This apple is delicious. (adjective) That is the toy I bought. (pronoun) That toy is the one I bought. (adjective)

10 6. Indefinite Pronouns Refers to a person, place, thing, or idea that is not always known There are many indefinite pronouns--some common ones: SingularPlural everyone, no one, somebodyany, all, more, few Ex: None of us knew much about the surprise.
