St. Petersburg Fun Facts This city was founded in 1703 It served Russia as a capital city for 206 years ( 1712-1918 ) Name of the city was changed thrice in the history. (Petrograd and Leningrad were its two old names.) The city normally has ”21 White Nights” in summer from about June 11 to July 2. During these days, the sun does not set.

Saint Basil’s Cathedral Fun Facts Ivan the Terrible commissioned the building of the cathedral to commemorate the capture of the Tartar stronghold of Kazan When it was built St Basil’s exterior walls and domes were not as colourful as they are today. This colour and detail was added during the 200 years after construction Since 1990 the church has been part of the Moscow Kremlin and Red Square UNESCO World Heritage Site
