NOTES Ch 2: bioenergy 10/13
4
BIOENERGY Energy that living things make, store, or use to live. *Comes from food
5
CATABOLISM Process by which organisms get energy by breaking down foods Decomposition reaction (releases energy) ½ energy stored as ATP (energy molecule) ½ released as heat (keeps body warm)
6
ANABOLISM Process by which the body builds molecules Synthesis reaction (uses energy)
7
METABOLISM All the chemical changes food goes through in the body “body’s use of food” Anabolism + catabolism
8
2 forms: PLANTS: Photosynthesis Co2 + water + sun ----- O2 + sugar ANIMALS Cellular Respiration O2 + sugar -- water + Co2 + energy
9
WARM UP 9/29 1. Find the atomic number of sodium 2. What is made when an acid and base react? 3. What does ADH do? 4. What are 3 ways our body maintains acid-base balance? 5. What is a negative ion called? 6. What period is iron in?
