3 3 The past perfect progressive emphasizes the DURATION of an activity that was in progress before another activity or time in the past. Past Perfect Progressive Examples: The police had been looking for the criminal for two years before they caught him. We had been waiting for Nancy for over three hours before she finally arrived yesterday.

4 4 The past perfect progressive also may express an activity in progress close in time to another activity or time in the past. Past Perfect Progressive Examples: When Judy got home, her hair was still wet because she had been swimming. I went to Jane’s house after the funeral. Her eyes were red because she had been crying.

5 The past perfect continuous tense expresses longer actions in the past before another action in the past. For example: Ram started waiting at 9am. I arrived at 11am. When I arrived, Ram had been waiting for two hours. Past Perfect Progressive

6 – Ex: our game of tennis was interrupted. we´d been playing for about half an hour when it started to rain

7 Past perfect continuous Ex: Angel gave up smoking five years ago. he´d been smoking for 30 years

8 EX: I hope the bus comes soon. I´ve been waiting for 20 minutes. EX:At last the bus came, I´d been waiting for 20 minutes (before the bus came)
