3. Nasser Nasser was determined to end western power in Egypt. In 1956, he nationalized the Suez canal ending British control. The canal represents the only direct means of travel from the mediterranean to the indian ocean, which is important for all the countries in the world. However Great Britain and France wanted to control this for himself. Nasser however believed he should control it since its closer to Egypt.
