Key terms chamfered having an edge or corner cut off for a finished appearance and to break sharp edges; beveled drum in architecture, the encircling wall that supports a dome or cupola; any of the cylindrical blocks that make up the shaft of a pillar fritware A type of pottery in which frit (a special ceramic mixture of sand and fluxes) is added to clay to reduce its fusion temperature, so the mixture can be fired at a lower temperature than clay alone; also known as Islamic stone paste. graphical perspective An approximate representation on a flat surface (such as paper) of an image as it is seen by the eye; objects are typically drawn smaller as their distance from the observer increases. iwan a large, vaulted chamber with a monumental arched opening on one side Mughal Empire An empire extending over large parts of the Indian subcontinent from 1526 until 1858 and ruled by a dynasty of Chagatai-Turkic origin. Seljuk A Persianate Muslim dynasty, of Oghuz Turkic origin, which established both the Great Seljuq Empire and Sultanate of Rum, between the 11th and 14th centuries, in large parts of Southwest Asia and Asia Minor, respectively.
