How is Thermal Energy Used? Danielle Ruff CES 3rd Grade

Ways to Make Things Hot Name some ways to make things hot. Friction is a force between moving objects. Friction slows the moving object and produces heat. Pg. 178

Ways to Make Things Hot Thermal energy can also be made in electricity. An iron uses electricity to get hot. The mixing of chemicals can also produce thermal energy. Some heat packs produce thermal energy in this way. Pg. 179

Ways to Use Thermal Energy Fires to cook food (before stoves or ovens were around) Cars burn gasoline in order to run. Sitting by a fire to get warm Warm bath or shower (thermal energy is used to warm the water) Your body produces its own thermal energy to keep your body at 98.6°F (or 37º C). Pg. 180

Ways to Use Thermal Energy The sun is a source of heat. Some people use solar panels to heat the water used in their homes. Other people use boxes called solar cookers to cook food in places without electricity. Pg. 181

Ways to Use Thermal Energy You learned that mixing chemicals can create heat. Some chemicals absorb heat when they are mixed. Ice packs, air conditioners, and refrigerators all use chemicals that absorb heat. Pg. 181
