Crow Lake CHAPTER SUMMARIES CHAPTERS 8-10 INFORMATION Chapter 8: In the Present Dream: Matt telling Kate about water surface tension (this is Kate’s area of expertise as an adult) Kate: Seems depressed with work and life Did Daniel see invitation for Simon’s birthday? –Possible breakdown in relationship Information about Daniel’s parents and their arguing style Daniel explains he feels that he knows nothing about Kate Question: Why does Kate not want to introduce Daniel to her family? Chapter 9: In the Past Aunt Annie leaves and the four children are on their own Emotions of the brothers – Luke is happy; Matt is worried Laurie Pye randomly shows up. See last paragraph, p. 98 Luke having hard time finding work but then finds work at McLean’s store Sally McLean begins cozying up to Luke. Crow Lake CHARACTER DEVELOPMENTS CHAPTERS 8-10 INFORMATION Readers are introduced to a number of new characters in these five chapters. Make sure you understand some of the qualities of: Aunt Annie – Who is she? What is her role? Does family have an obligation to step in and help in situations like this? Daniel – How would you describe his and Kate’s relationship? Pye Family – Why does there seem to be so much tension when describing these characters?

Crow Lake CHARACTER TRAITS CHAPTERS 8-10 INFORMATION By the end of Chapter Eight, readers learn many details about Kate as an adult. These pieces of information are called character traits. They don’t refer to just her appearance, but more about why she says or does things. What makes her tick? Childhood Experiences Relationship With Family Relationship With Daniel Consider Kate as an adult: Character Traits can be found in the text, (directly by a statement from the narrator or indirectly by a statement from someone else), or interpreted by the reader How would you describe Kate to a friend? What is Kate like as a teacher? What is Kate like as a partner? Why is Kate the way she is?

She is the one who describes the other characters but the other characters are the ones who influence Kate. What does Kate tell us about… McLean Family Pye Family Daniel Luke Matt Think about… What they act like Their relationships with others Their upbringing Adjectives describing personality How will you support/explain these things to others?

Crow Lake FORESHADOWING CHAPTERS 8-10 INFORMATION There are two clear examples of foreshadowing in these two chapters: “One other thing occurred that day; an incident unconnected to Aunt Annie’s departure. At the time none of us thought anything of it, and in fact it was a long time before I even thought of it again and longer still before I realized that it might have had some significance.” (p. 96) “As for Marie I see now that he may also have found comfort in those brief meetings with Marie.” (p. 103) What clues in these passages tell us that they are foreshadowing a future event?

Crow Lake SUPPORTING ANSWERS WITH QUOTES CHAPTERS 8-10 INFORMATION One of the most effective ways to support an answer is by quoting directly from the text. To do this correctly, there is a process to follow in your writing: Make Your Point Include Quote Explain It Kate struggles in her career as a teacher. “The marking of lab reports…It is enough to make you weep” (82) Kate clearly gets frustrated by the poor efforts of her students

To do this correctly, there is a process to follow in your writing: Kate struggles in her career as a teacher. “Why do kids come to university if they aren’t interested in learning” (82)? Kate clearly gets frustrated by the poor efforts of her students It is clear that Kate struggles in her career as a teacher. She wonders, “why do kids come to university if they aren’t interested in learning” (Lawson 82)? This shows that she is frustrated by the poor efforts of her students in their work, which is a big difference to how passionate she is about the subject of biology.

Crow Lake SUPPORTING ANSWERS WITH QUOTES CHAPTERS 8-10 INFORMATION Introduce quote. Different methods to do this Add quote. Notice quotation marks and punctuation Explanation. Show how this quote supports your point/idea Clear introduction to make point It is clear that Kate struggles in her career as a teacher.
