Explaining a Combustion Reaction
2
What is Combustion Reaction?
3
What are some real-life examples of combustion reactions? When people are cooking on a gas stove or a candle burning. Burning wood to make a fire. Burning coal to make electricity Burning gasoline in a car to make the car move forward.
4
How are combustion reactions used in our daily lives? Transportation (almost all motorized vehicles in North America except electric cars) Burning trash to get rid of garbage (mostly in Europe and Asia) Electricity- burning of coal All tools…like lawnmower, leaf blower… Industry…to make all goods and products
5
How could you describe a combustion reaction to someone who didn't have a very good background in chemistry? Is a reaction in which oxygen reacts with an organic compound (generally a hydrocarbon) to produce energy in the form of heat and light. When organic molecules combust the reaction products are carbon dioxide and water.
6
2 Types of Chemical Reactions!!! Complete Clean combustion with a hydrocarbon produces carbon dioxide and water Incomplete Dirty combustion with a hydrocarbon produces carbon or carbon monoxide also carbon dioxide.
7
Incomplete Combustion Facts and Concerns Other products formed are C (s), soot (molecules that clump together and are mostly made of carbon), CO (g), unburned fuel Flame is more yellow (1200 o C) than blue (1400 o C) Occurs in less than ideal conditions like lack of oxygen Furnace for example might be malfunctioning Soot particles are an inhalation hazard. They can lead to various problems like asthma, lung cancer.. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless and is called the silent killer On average 7 Ontarians are killed every year from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning…Ontario now requires by law that every household has a carbon monoxide detector Loss of fuel…inefficiency and waste
