2 Officially also ‘s-Gravenhage, "The Count's Hedge" is the third-largest city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam and Rotterdam, with a population of 475,580.

3 Symbol of The Hague The arms of The Hague, approved in 1816, depict a stork and eel, The shield is held by a pair of gold lions and bears a count's coronet.

4 Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands lives and works in The Hague. Royal The Hague The Hague located on the North Sea coast is the royal city of Holland. Home to the Dutch royal family and government.

5 The Hague City Hall & Library Share the same building nicknamed the Ice Palace.

6 City life concentrates around the Hofvijver and the Binnenhof, where the parliament is located.HofvijverBinnenhof The Hague originated around 1230, when Floris IV, Count of Holland purchased land alongside a pond (now the hofvijver) in order to build a (hunting) residence. The most prominent of all is the Ridderzaal (Knights' Hall).Floris V Ridderzaal It is still in use for political events, such as the annual speech from the throne by the queen.

7 EUROPOL Europol is the European Union's criminal intelligence agency. It became fully operational on July 1, 1999.European Unioncriminal intelligence July 11999 Europol's aim is to improve the effectiveness and co- operation between the authorities of the member states by sharing intelligence to prevent and combat serious international organised crime.

8 The Peace Palace The Peace Palace is a gift from the American Andrew Carnegie to the city of The Hague. This palace was given the name of Peace Palace, to express the great importance attached to this endeavour to solve disputes and so to maintain world peace. All nations contributed towards the construction of the Peace Palace to symbolise the collaboration of the nations in the foundation of this "Temple of Peace". The Peace Palace houses the International Court of Justice, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Academy of International Law and a splendid library.

9 The City Centre In the city centre, shops are open everyday from 10am to about 6pm On Thursdays they are open till 9pm. It is call “Koopavond” (shopping evening) Restaurants are usually open everyday, but the last order is at bout 10pm. For a quick bite after mid-night, you can usually find a couple of Turkish bars open till about 3am.

11 Scheveningen Beach Scheveningen is the most popular sea-side resort in Holland. The resort of Scheveningen is only a 15- minute tram-ride from the centre of The Hague. The town has swallowed up the original fishing village of Scheveningen Haven, which has still managed to maintain some of its traditional fishing industry.

12 Maritime Museum Museum Scheveningen gives its visitors a lively picture of the history of this former fishing village. Seaside activities and fishing were dominant factors in everyday life and gave the village a unique character. 13 Kijkduin & Meijendel Kijkduin Beach and the Meijendel park are both nearby. The beach and the dunes have plenty to offer such as hiking, horseriding or cycling.

14 Madurodam The world-famous miniature city Madurodam presents everything Holland is famous for replicated to the smallest detail on a scale of 1:25. It’s an excellent way to familiarise yourself with all surprising features Holland has to offer: the Alkmaar cheese market, the Peace Palace of The Hague, the Royal Palace on Dam Square and canal houses of Amsterdam and parts of the world famous Delta works.

15 Panorama Mesdag This is an enormous cylindrical painting by H.W. Mesdag. At 1680 m2, it's the largest painting in Holland and one of the largest and most striking in the world. Stand in the middle and view life as it was in 1881 when Scheveningen was a peaceful fishing village.
