Textual analysis of green zone By Sian Perrier
2
Green zone mise-en-scene The film starts with a lot of non-diegetic sounds such as the low sound of sirens that get louder as this happens it is joined by the muffled sounds of radio broadcasts that then get clearer and give you information about what is happening and when about the film is set The first setting is in a generals home that is being evacuated because of the starting war. The audience sees notebook a lot of times in the OTS which implies that it is important and the director wants you to remember. It could connate betrayal, deceit and secrets This is the first shot we see so the audience can guess that it must have some importance because it is falling over it could reflect what is happening in reality – the war with America or that their economy is coming to an end so should not fight it. Dark lighting suggests it night/without any power. The orange glow/light empathises the emergency of the situation. The orange light could be that the building was set on fire. Wearing army clothes which makes audience think he is the protagonist straight away because soldiers fight for their country. Dirty window tells the audience that he is riding in a vehicle and the dirt and dust suggest that he has been their along time or reflects the state of the country Light tells you it’s a new day and that it is daytime.

cinematography In the first 1 minute and 30 seconds of the film this notebook has been shown 3 time for quite a considerable number of seconds which suggests to the audience that it must be of some significance and importance. It makes the audience curious and remember it. This extreme long shot gives the audience it’s first indication to where the film is set and what it looks like it also tells you what type of state it is in. The establishing shot shows the audience where the first scene is going to set and tells them where the majority of the action will take so they can visualise the building while the action happens. Throughout the first scene a handheld camera is used to empathise the bombs and the panic. This makes the audience feel uncomfortable and unease also what the characters are feeling Is so shaky that the guy falls over.
