6 Historians work like detectives. They use all kinds of evidence to try to piece together a picture of what different cultures were like. Sometimes we have lots of evidence and sometimes we have very little to work with. With Ghana we really only have written primary sources to work with.

7 I am going to give you 3 primary source documents and you have to tell me what they are about.

8 What kind of Evidence can we find in the sources? Geographical evidence? Evidence about thier Religion? How Smart they were (Achievements)? Political evidence? Economics? Social Structure?

9 Try this one first. “On every donkey load of salt when it is brought into the country, their king levies (taxes) one golden dinar (coin) and two golden dinars when it is sent out.”

13 What is this primary source talking about? “ The city of Ghana consists of 2 towns situated on a plain. One of these towns which inhabited by Muslims, is large and possesses 12 mosques in which they assemble for Friday prayer. There are salaried Imams (religious leaders) and muezzins (Men who call Muslims to prayer, as well as jurists (legal scholars) as well as scholars.”
